Lynelle Noisy Hawk-Good Sell

Lynelle was born on June 15, 1970 to Lyle Noisy Hawk Sr. and Mary Emily Last Horse. Lynelle is from the Robert Bad Wound lineage. She was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the Wanblee and Martin, South Dakota area. Lynelle is second oldest of four children.

Lynelle grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation until the second grade. She went to high school in Rapid City, SD. Lynelle knew early on that she wanted to pursue a higher education, therefore, she took the appropriate classes early on in high school to help prepare her.

Lynelle is married to Todd Goodsell and is the proud mother of a 12-year old son and a 1-year old daughter. Lynelle is currently residing in North Dakota where she is working at an Indian Hospital.

In her spare time, Lynelle likes to bead and traditional dance. Both her and her husband take part in Pow Wow's throughout the year and both traditional dance. Lynelle, Todd, and Lynelle's father all contributed to their Indian dance outfits. Lyle Sr. made the dresses for Lynelle. Lynelle is currently making beaded Indian leggings, and moccasin's for her daughter's outfit.

Lynelle has a lot of great memories as a child. When she thinks back to her childhood, she feels blessed to have been able to spend it with her grandparents and learn from their wisdom. Lynelle's Unci (grandmother) Eva Last Horse made a difference in Lynelle's life with her wisdom and teachings. It is because of her that Lynelle can bead. One of her fondest memories is when they would be cherry picking, or timpsila (wild turnip) digging during the summers. It was so beautiful to be out in the country where the family grew up. Unci Eva used to tell the grandkids stories of the different places while they were picking the plums, cherries, etc. When they were done berry picking, they would take them home and watch Unci Eva grind the cherries and put them out to dry. Lynelle also remembers Unci Eva making bapa (dried deer meat). Lynelle feels her experiences taking part of these traditions with her Unci were a blessing.

During the holidays, Lynelle remembers the huge Christmas gatherings at the home of Oliver and Mary Bad Wound in Martin, South Dakota. It was an all day event, with a large lunch and dinner. Then in the evening they would distribute bags of candy to everyone filled with candy, nuts, and fruit. Then they would distribute the gifts from under the tree, there was always one gift for everyone. As a child, Lynelle never thought those days would end.

Lynelle attended several undergraduate institutions and finally settled down and graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry and Pre-Medicine from South Dakota State University in May 1996. Lynelle was accepted into Medical School at University of North Dakota in 1997, then transferred to University of South Dakota School of Medicine and completed her Doctor of Medicine degree in May 2003. Due to her pregnancy, she took one year off. Lynelle and her family have since relocated to North Dakota to begin her Family Practice Residency Program. Once Lynelle is done with her program, she plans to practice on various reservations to serve the Native American people.

In 2002, Lynelle and her family were named the Family of the Year by the University of South Dakota.

In closing, Lynelle would like to encourage all family members to take advantage of the Bad Wound family website and learn about our history. It is vital that we pass on this history to future generations.
